In certain situations, a tooth may require further treatment to avoid extraction. When the nerve of a tooth becomes painful or infected, it may require root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, involves removing the inflamed or infected nerve from the root canal space within the tooth. Once the nerve has been removed, the root canal space is cleaned and shaped to prepare it for a filling. After the tooth has been root canal treated, it is often weaker as tooth structure has been removed to access the nerve. In certain cases, a crown or cast restoration is indicated to prevent the tooth fracturing during normal chewing and use of the tooth.

Root canal treatment may be completed over one or more appointments depending on the tooth and complexity of the case. Because a tooth can sometimes be more vulnerable after root canal treatment, a crown or another protective restoration may also be recommended afterwards to strengthen the tooth and reduce the risk of fracture.
