Scaling & Hygiene

Maintaining good dental hygiene is essential for preventing oral health problems. At our Limerick city dental clinic, we offer scaling, polishing, and deep cleaning services to help keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean.

During a hygiene appointment, we remove any build-up of plaque and tartar, to help prevent gum disease.

Scaling, Polishing & Deep Cleaning

Scaling involves removing any build-up of plaque / tartar from your teeth and gum line.

Polishing on the other hand helps to remove any surface stains.

Deep cleaning involves a more thorough cleaning to remove bacteria and debris from below the gum line.

The benefits of these procedures include fresher breath, a brighter smile, and reduced risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is generally recommended that patients have a dental exam every six months. In certain instances, an examination may be advised more frequently.

Firstly, the dentist will go through your medical history and ask about any medications that you may be taking. Then we move on to assess the face and neck for any ‘lumps or bumps’ or issues with your jaw joint. We then move inside the mouth to check the skin (mucosa) of your mouth to make sure it is healthy. Next we will assess your teeth and gums. The last part of the examination would be to take any necessary dental x-rays, if required.

Dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque, tartar and surface staining from the teeth.
Be familiar with any medical conditions that you may have and bring a list of medication that you may be taking.
It is best to advise any member of staff and the dentist if you are anxious about attending the dentist. We will work with you to help you complete any necessary dental treatment in a way that is suitable for you. This can be discussed during your dental examination or at any time throughout your treatment.
Maintaining good health at home is essential to maintaining good oral health throughout your lifetime. It is best to brush your teeth in the morning and last thing at night. Use a fluoridated toothpaste. Spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse your mouth afterwards. Floss between your teeth or use interdental cleaning aids daily. Minimise the frequency of sugar consumption from foods and drinks. Minimise the frequency of consumption of acidic foods and drinks also.
It is recommended to have your teeth professionally cleaned every 6months. In certain cases, it may be advised to have your teeth cleaned more frequently. This will be discussed during your appointment with the dentist.
By removing plaque and tartar build up and surface stains, your teeth will appear whiter. However, you may wish to have professional teeth whitening also and this is something that can be discussed with the dentist.
